Being happily perched on top of the Google ladder is the dream of every business owner. Unfortunately for many businesses the whole world of SEO can be quite confusing. So How can SEO help my business?

So what is Search Engine Optimisation and how can it help your business?

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Put simply, Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the process of improving the visibility of your website and website pages in search engine results. It’s really a giant online popularity contest, where the aim is for your business is to be on the top of the list for your chosen search terms.

When people speak about SEO they are generally referring to the organic, or unpaid results that appear when you are looking up something online.

Why is SEO important?

It is a well known fact that businesses that appear higher up on the results list receive exponentially more clicks through to their website, otherwise known as website traffic.

Hence, businesses all around the world are constantly competing to be higher up the list, which in turn drives traffic, enquiries and sales.

Did you know: Google gets over 3 Billion searches daily! That’s a lot of questions being searched for and a lot of websites being found.

How does it all work?

Whilst no-one knows the exact Google algorithms used, it is generally accepted that search engines look for content (meaning web pages) that provided relevant information from trustworthy sources.

They do this by sending out their online bots known as ‘spiders’, to constantly trawl the internet and re-evaluate everything online.

The more visits your website gets the better. And the more visits it gets from reputable sources is even better again. Your ranking is a constant shift and the race is on to ensure your business remains at the top of your field.

Did you know: 60% of all organic clicks go to the organic top 3 search results.

How can SEO help my business?

By understanding SEO and the need to appear high up on search pages, you can take a range of steps to improve your performance.

There are a number of options such as:

  • Researching and selecting relevant Keywords
  • Auditing and optimising your website (Search Engine Optimisation)
  • Creating and maintaining a blog

It is important to remember that it is a long process where overnight success rarely happens.

You need to be committed to SEO and research and work with people who can help your business.

So how do you get the most out of SEO for your business?

To give your business its best chance of success it really needs to be part of a well-constructed Inbound Marketing plan.
